Coolidge Elementary School Music

Coolidge music students attend music class once weekly for 45 minutes. Students will focus on essential elements of music such as: keeping a steady beat, singing, reading musical notation, composing, and playing instruments. Music class activities are based on folk songs, holidays, finger plays, chants, movement and dance. Students will learn basic musical skills such as tempo, rhythm, steady beat, pitch matching, Quarter notes, eighth notes, quarter rests, instrument names, and keeping simple melodies.

Coolidge students learn about music through participating in activities that encourage critical thinking, problem solving, taking risks and having fun! We also make a lot of music-literacy connections. 

Kindergarten
Students will learn basic musical skills such as tempo, rhythm, steady beat, pitch matching, quarter notes, eighth notes, quarter rests, finger plays, music games, classroom instrument names, and singing simple melodies. Students will react and move to music they hear in "Animal Marches" which take place at the start of every class. Our favorite songs this year include:

1st Grade
Students will continue to learn basic musical skills such as tempo, rhythm echoes, steady beat, pitch matching, 4 different voice types, quarter notes, eighth notes, quarter rests, instrument names, and singing simple melodies.
 We will do a unit on The Carnival of the Animals (Le carnaval des animaux) which is a humorous musical suite of fourteen movements by the French composer Camille Saint-Seans. Our favorite songs this year include: Two Feet, Mama Don't Low, Rain Rain go Away, Herman the Worm, Nice Not Naughty, My Dreydl, A Million Little Snowflakes, Better Bundle Up, Rudolph, Ebeneezer Sneezer, This Old Man, Bingo, Noble Duke of York, America, My Dreydl, Five Fat Turkeys, Up on the Housetop

2nd Grade
Students will expand on skills learned in K & 1st grade.
 2nd graders will have a unit Chinese music. We will listen to Chinese folk instruments, and then compose and perform our own Chinese songs. 2nd grade classes do a unit on chocolate in the fall. In music class we will learn a Mexican chant called "Bate Bate Chocolate". Students will learn about music theater and watch the original Mary Poppins. 3rd Grade
Expanding on musical skills from previous years, students will learn learn 2/4, & 3/4 meter and the complete 
Do Re Mi scale. Students will learn a unit on Rap music. We will write a rap as a class based on the book Enemy Pie. Students will also work in groups to compose their own raps. 4th Grade
Fourth grade students will learn how to play the recorder this year! We will use the fun recorder karate system to keep trace of our achievements, earning "belts" as we reach musical milestones. Students will prepare a spring concert! This year's concert theme is: Earth Day! Students will perform for both a student audience and a parent audience. 


ASD Center Classes
Students will explore classroom instruments through hands on experiences, and experience different kinds of music. Basic musical skills will be covered such as singing simple melodies, keeping a steady beat, tempo, dynamics, and naming instruments. Our favorite songs this year include: Bate Bate Chocolate, Do You Like Broccoli?, Five Little Monkeys, Whacky Do Re Mi, Twinkle Twinkle Little Star, Who Took the Candy?, Herman the Worm, What a Wonderful World, Down by the Bay, Spring is Here, Whacky Do Re Mi, Wheels on the Bus
